To study the internal dynamics of Cherokee society during the early 18th century when white traders who settled among the tribe had a profound impact on the economy, social and political organization, and attitudes of the Indians. Because the Cherokees were pre-literate, this study must be pursued in archival material in France, Spain, England, and South Carolina.
