The Insular Tradition of Boethius' De Institutione Musica

To study the 25 manuscript in England of Boethius' De institutione musica as part of a long range project treating the 124 manuscripts of this important work in the development of musical thought. PI will describe each manuscript, comment on glosses,, charts and the textual tradition itself, and finally describe how and in what intellectual contexts the work was read between 850 and 1600. I will also examine three English manuscripts which contain unedited commentaries on the treatise.
