Social Mobility of Alsatian Jews, 1808-1870

To study the social mobility of Alsatian Jews in the years 1808- 1870. PI will utilize manuscript censuses, Jewish communal tax and welfare lists, and notarial records in French archives as source: of information on shifts in occupational distribution as well as extent of capital accumulation. Central to the study is the relationship between migration to the cities and upward social mobility. PI will also study intergenerational mobility in individual families and the effects of discrimination on Alsatian Jewry.
