To investigate the problem of naturalization 1700-1776 which provides a classic illustration of that divergence between theory and practice within the first British Empire which eventually contributed to its partial dissolution. This evidence, in turn, offers a means of testing current hypotheses regarding the impact of the "parent-child" metaphor upon imperial relations prior to the American Revolution.
