A study which will provide information about the French press of the 18th century in general and its impact on society. PI will treat the journals as a whole and describe the social role played by the newspaper. Representative journals will be studied for 1) the legal and economic conditions for publication, 2) the social, educational, and economic backgrounds of their authors, 3) the subjects reported and the opinions expressed, and 4) insofar as it is possible, the audience they reached.
