To document the use of gospel songs in the Moody-Sankey revivals in the British Isles through newspaper accounts, correspondence, diaries, and published works. Moody and Sankey were two unknown evangelists who in 1875, created an international excitement with their preaching and singing in the "American vernacular." PI will relate the condition; in English society in 1875 to those in the United States in order to explain or to justify a common response to the gospel songs.
