Proposal is third stage of an on-going project. P.I. has already published a study of Elegy IV, 1 of Propertius, relating poetry to its historical and topographical context. Present study will encompass the other ten elegies of book four. Propertius emulated Virgil's poetry. The Design of Virgil's Bucolics offers a substantially new interpretation of the most influential poetry book in Latin, one that Propertius knew and employed. Building on his work with Virgil, P.I. hopes to give a new and more systematic treatment to the poetry book in Propertius, he will then continue study of other Augustan poets (e.g., Tibullus, Horace, and Ovid).
