To prepare a major monograph on the New Testament scholarship of the Renaissance humanists and its importance for the development of modern scholarship. Important work on the Greek New Testament was undertaken by a group of Spanish humanists in the early 16th century. This monograph will treat Spain alongside the rest of Renaissance Europe, a rare feature in recent scholarship, and it will make possible a better understanding of the Renaissance as an historical period. These Spanish humanists developed brand-new methods and principles of scholarship and in doing so they clearly broke with the medieval scholarly tradition and laid the foundations for modern literary, historical, .and biblical scholarship.
