To create an annotated index to the reviews of books by American authors which appeared in New York City newspapers from the founding of the first "penny" daily, the Sun, to the beginning of the Civil War. Work will provide a basic research tool to fill the needs of scholars of American history, literature, and culture for reliable and complete information about how books by American writers were received when they were published. Publication is under contract with the G.K. Hall Publishing Company.
