To study the nature and extent of geographical and social mobility in 2 French villages during the 16th and 17th centuries. PI seeks to demonstrate that a considerable amount of mobility took place within the villages of early modern France, contrary to the widely- held view of early modern peasant culture as stunted and dominated by escapist impulses. Late 17th century manorial surveys, tax rolls, and notarial archives will be examined.
