To complete a study on the background of the 1st official American policy toward China. Ultimately, the unofficial policy of the American residents in Canton became Washington's official policy, with certain critical additions (i.e. extraterritoriality and specified missionary rights) which were extensions of earlier unofficial policy. Thesis that the American community at Canton was originator and force behind official U.S. policy shall be tested.
