To study the cardinal Hua-yen Buddhist doctrine of the "Ten Arcana," based on a close reading and interpretation of the relevant Chinese primary sources. The "Ten Arcana" is a central teaching of a very important school of East Asian Buddhism, produced during its period of maturity in the late eighth and ninth centuries. It is a useful example of the transformation of Buddhism from an originally Indian tradition into an authentically Chinese system of thought.
