To write a book-length study of the attitudes of Harriet Beecher Stowe toward slavery and toward the role of blacks in American society. In addition, it is a study of the history of literary and social opinion in regard to Uncle Tom's Cabin Topics to be explored include: ideas which influenced Stowe; the socio-political and literary response to the novel; an assessment of Stowe's influence after the writing of Uncle Tom's Cabin; her reputation after the Civil War.
