To investigate and collect historical and biographical writings of the 3rd and 4th centuries to complete a study of biographical funerary monuments of the Roman Empire from the 2nd through 4th centuries, A.D., in their relation to Roman literary biography, panegyric, and eulogy. Work should confirm connections between visual and literary or oral biography in both structure and meaning and should reveal social and psychological changes in the aristocratic patronage group during a period of major historical transformation.
