The Influence of Italian Merchant Bankers on the Legislation of Edward I

FAIN: FT-13889-78

Judith S. Koffler
Pace University College of White Plains (White Plains, NY 10603-3710)

To study the Statute of Acton Burnell in 1283 and the Statute of Merchants in 1285, through which Edward I responded to the Italian entrepreneurs' demands for swift and certain creditors' remedies for defaulting debtors. The legislation and its history, both political and economic, and its effects on the development of nascent capitalism in England will be explored. PI hopes to demonstrate that economic transformation and legal transformation went hand in hand.
