To investigate Philip Melanchthon's developing exegesis of Paul's letter to the Romans in the light of humanist, Lutheran, and other Reformed interpretation of Romans in the early 16th century. Several lectures and commentaries by Melanchthon from 1520 to 1556 on this letter, which he considered to be the primary basis of the Reformation theological program, will be examined. End product of this study will be a monograph on Melanchthon's exegesis of Romans—long-range goal is a comprehensive treatment of Romans interpretation in the 16th century.
