To research the historical context of the meaning of household and family in contemporary America. These historical sources will be integrated into a book explaining the multiplicity of family forms from a cultural, rather than biological, point of view. Variations among American families will be shown to reflect the diversity of experiences and socio-economic stresses different ethnic groups, classes, genders and generations face in this country.
