To investigate the flow of American bullion to Portugal in the period 1700-1775. Two questions will provide the focus: what proportion of gold mined in Brazil remained in the colony, and what form did these remittances take. Results of this research will provide insights into the commercial and monetary history of Portugal and Brazil, as well as provide the basis for further inquiry into the impact of American bullion on Anglo Portuguese commercial relations and Portuguese domestic and foreign policy in the 18th cent.
