To write a book-length study of the modern long poem as a tradition in Hispanic poetry. A critical reading of seven poems, from Miguel de Unamo's El Cristo de Velazquez (1920) to Octavio Paz's El Mono Gramatico (1975), will show how Hispanic poems subvert established European notions of poetic form. These poems eventually established a separate tradition of polemical dialogue with one another, a system of mutual revision and commentary.
