To write a volume of essays providing a portrait of the American scientific community of the period 1815 - 1860. This era has special significance for American science as it saw the heyday of cultural patriotism, the rapidly increasing specialization of the sciences, triumph of egalitarian sentiment, emergence of the federal institutions of science and of a formal organization of scientists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
