To do a book-length study of the development of Chinese poetry in the tz1u genre from the middle of the T'ang dynasty (early 8th century A.D.) until the beginning of the Sung dynasty (960). The primary focus of the research will be early anonymous tz'u poetry from the Tun-huang manuscripts; these texts will then be compared with tz'u poems from the later T'ang and Five Dynasties periods to show the dynamic interaction between a refined poetic genre and the popular song form from which it developed.
