To write a survey, including a catalogue, introductory essay, and a large selection of plates of French Gothic sculpture from 1270, the death of St. Louis, to the mid-fourteenth century—a period about which very little is known. The introductory essay will explore the architectural form of the portal, the particular subjects favored in this period, and the types of sculpture produced for church interiors. Period style will be analyzed and suggestions made as to why certain characteristics such as projection in space, characteristics we consider "sculptural," become weaker and why the pace of the development is so slow.
