Inversions of Epic and Pastoral: The Fate of the Vergilian Progression in the Later Renaissance

To investigate the thesis that English Renaissance authors inverted the Vergilian progression of genres to create new senses of human character and action and to explore new conceptions of human history and salvation. In this process of revision, pastoral emerges as a metaphor for individual sensibility confronting the demands of history.
