Ivan Pavlov: A Life in Russian Science

FAIN: FT-51254-03

Daniel Todes
Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD 21218-2608)

The project is a scholarly biography of the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936. I have completed the great bulk of the research, but periodic short, focused research trips are valuable because the process of writing continually generates new subjects for research, and because new materials are gradually becoming accessible. In Summer 2003 I want to investigate several topics, including: 1) Pavlov's pre-1917 social circle, his relationship with the eminent artist Dubovskoi, and his art collection; 2)His wife's religious activities; 3)His scientific conflict with V. M. Bekhterev; and 4)His love affair and scientific collaboration with Maria Petrova. I want also to examine some rare documentary film.
