Based on research conducted in the U.S. and Germany, this project offers extensive historical documentation of international cultural exchange between the end of WWII in 1945 and German reunification in 1990. Exploring the postwar and Cold War-era relationship between Germany's musical infrastructure and American composer-performers, this broad study demonstrates how German support led to the production and dissemination of a unique and internationally influential American experimental tradition. The book, which will be published by University of California Press, targets both a general audience and a community of cultural historians.
