My project is to explore the public presentation and reception of the reconstruction of S. Paolo fuori le mura (1823-1930), the largest Church-sponsored building project in Rome during this long and turbulent period. I seek funding for a research trip to Rome to examine primary materials--newspapers, periodicals, and some archival materials--from the period 1823-1870 (leaving materials from the period 1870-1930 for a subsequent visit). I plan to write a long article on the subject, although my longer term plan is to write a book that examines public discourse on the form and meaning of the city of Rome during the nineteenth century.
