The goal of this summer project is to do research for a book in progress. The subject of the book is the transformation of nationalism in the Baltic states. During 1991-2003 nationalism underwent a transformation in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania from illiberal to more liberal forms. The aim of the book is to identify the causes that led to this transformation. Although the book uses research that I did for my doctoral dissertation this research is now three years old and needs to be updated. The proposed research would cover the changes that have taken place over the past three years in two areas: (1) official state policies towards ethnic minorities, and (2) state involvement in the teaching of history.
