This is a book project in which I examine the relationship between provincial Estates and the French crown during the pivotal years surrounding the reign of Louis XIII (1610-1643). This was a period in the development of royal absolutism marked by attacks on provincial Estates that produced very different outcomes in different provinces. Using archival research, I will undertake to explain those different outcomes by focusing on the local social forces that either succeeded or failed in defending their Estates.
