Movie-Made China: A Study of Everyday Film Culture from Hollywood to Shanghai

FAIN: FT-52590-04

Eileen Cheng-yin Chow
President and Fellows of Harvard College (Cambridge, MA 02138-3800)

"Movie-Made China" tells the rich history of the intense, sustained, and creatively productive engagement of Hollywood and Chinese cinemas, and traces the repeated circulation of technologies, film styles, and individual talent between these film industries from the late nineteenth century to the present. In doing so, this study hopes to focus attention on the history of film's cultural reception in various locales, the role that cinema plays in the practice of everyday life, and the unexpected links and crossovers between disparate film cultures.
