In six thematic chapters, ranging from the 1922 Colonial Exposition to the 1939 celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the French Revolution in Marseilles, the manuscript analyzes the discourses which created the city's multi-faceted civic imaginary and explores how this imaginary shaped practices relating to immigrant workers, colonial migrants, gender, labor, and municipal politics.
