FAIN: FT-53460-05

Ronald D. Eller
University of Kentucky (Lexington, KY 40506-0001)

This project is designed to support the completion of a manuscript that will provide a narrative history and critical analysis of public and private efforts to bring economic development and social change to Appalachia since 1945. The project will describe the evolution of modernization strategies within the region, the role of Appalachia in national debates over the Great Society and the War on Poverty, the conflicting values inherent in development strategies, and the response of mountain elites and working class people to changing economic conditions. This manuscript is the culmination of research begun in the 1990s and over thirty years of personal experience in research and public policy formulation related to Appalachia.
