Medieval secular images deserve the deep, sustained attention from scholars that religious images have received. Close analysis of the source and functions of the murals at Saint-Floret (France) suggest that such attention will be well-rewarded. This book provides a new contribution to the history of images, as it focuses on the affective experience of secular images, while also making visible the way that distinctive strategies of representing visual narrative can bind both secular and sacred works. The project shows how secular text and image, by controlling and determining experience, constructed individual and group identity. The present grant would allow me to complete two chapters of a manuscript already well underway.
