I am requesting a Summer Stipend to support archival research and writing on a project entitled "Plowshares into Swords: World War II and the Environment in Britain." This study will examine the environmental consequences of the Second World War in Britain, the significance of particular landscapes to national identity and wartime propaganda, and the connection between wartime and postwar environmental activism and government policy. By the end of the grant period I will complete the first draft of a scholarly article based on this research and begin work on a book. The latter will likely attract a wide readership not just of students and scholars, but also of others interested in World War II, British history, and environmental studies.
