This project consists of research in France for a biography of François Furet (1927-1997), a historian of the French Revolution of 1789 whose impact on scholarship, politics, and intellectual institutions makes him one of the most important French intellectuals of the last third of the twentieth century. During the award period I will conduct interviews with individuals who knew Furet, search French libraries and research centers for relevant published material unavailable in the United States, and undertake research in multiple archives, including audiovisual archives, the archives of educational institutions, governmental archives, the archives of political parties, and personal archives.
