This study will be the first book length treatment of Madison's revolutionary argument for an extended republic. It will place Madison’s defense of an extended republic in the context of a broad historical conversation about the proper relationship of size and republicanism that took place in the early American republic. It will also provide a developmental analysis of Madison's evolving understanding of the extended republic, offer a comprehensive and balanced reading of Madison's theory and an assessment of the criticisms that have been lodged against it, and explore the effects of the creation of an extended republic on the development and contemporary character of democracy in the United States.
