"The Peace of God" and Conflict Resolution in France, c. 970 - c. 1040. My project is to travel to Europe to undertake a critical re- examination of the primary sources concerning the "Peace of God" a movement intended to resolve conflicts and suppress violence through religious sanctions. First, I will prepare critical editions of texts for which no modern edition exists. (For many of these texts, scholars have relied on fallible transcriptions dating to the nineteenth century or earlier.) Secondly, I will study manuscripts which circulated in relevant regions of France, with particular attention to marginal commentary. Thirdly, I will edit several previously unidentified and unstudied documents which shed light on this movement.
