Next Generation Scholarship: The Philosophy of Walter Chatton

FAIN: FT-54775-07

Rondo Patten Keele
Northwestern State (Natchitoches, LA 71497)

This Stipend would finance a 2-3 month research trip to the Pontifical Institute in Toronto to investigate the sources that Walter Chatton (d.1343) quotes in his last known work, Quodlibet, which is being edited by Girard Etzkorn and myself from Codex Paris Nat. Lat. 15.805, a late fourteenth or fifteenth-century Latin manuscript. The Quodlibet is a revised record of public debates that Chatton held while Franciscan regent master of Oxford, during 1329-30. The text, which treats twenty-nine topics suggested by the audience covering issues in ethics, metaphysics, physics, and theology, is one of the last English quodlibeta we possess; the genre died out after 1340.
