Inhumanities: The Reception and Manipulation of Western Cultural History in Nazi Propaganda

FAIN: FT-54833-07

David Bruce Dennis
Loyola University, Chicago (Chicago, IL 60611-2147)

This book analyzes how the main newspaper of the Nazi party presented the history of Western art, literature, music, and thought according to the National Socialist world view. It is a study of every major article Der Völkische Beobachter (The Folkish Observer) published about the leading writers, composers, and artists of the Western tradition. It demonstrates how Hitler’s Germany tried to appropriate not only the Germany of “Poets and Thinkers,” but Western Humanities as a whole. Nazi leaders viewed their movement as the culmination of Western Civilization, and this book leads readers through their cultural self-justification.
