The Italian archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani’s (1845-1929) century-old publications and illustrated reconstructions of ancient Rome are still considered to be standard reference sources. In order to gauge the extent of his shaping of the scholarship on ancient Rome, I propose to research the methods, assumptions and ideological slant of his archaeological practice, and its reception in the newly established Italian state and in the English-speaking world. This summer I will visit various archives in the United States to gather information about his lecture tours and publication ventures in this country, with the intent of completing a manuscript tentatively entitled RODOLFO LANCIANI'S ANCIENT ROME.
