Nebraska Indian Community College (Macy, NE 68039-3051)

This project will modernize and digitize the 546 pages of Omaha tales recorded by James Owen Dorsey in 1890 in an archaic orthography which is not understandable to current Omaha tribal members and is out of print. This collection of traditional stories will be transcribed in the modern orthography used by the Tribe and made available in both digital and printed versions. The glosses (definitions) posited by Dorsey will be refined to coincide with the system of glossing used by the reservation public school and community college. The database created will also allow for searching of words and linguistic patterns.
