The Manuscript Tradition of Deus non habet

FAIN: FT-57689-10

I propose to use the summer of 2010 to collate manuscripts of the anonymous sentence collection Deus non habet. This work is one of the earliest sentence collections associated with the school of Master Anselm of Laon (d. 1117) and may even have been used/compiled by Anselm himself. Because no edition or even transcription of this sentence collection has ever been published, few scholars have been able to consult it, and those who have - ignorant of the full manuscript tradition - have all relied on late versions and manuscripts. This research forms part of a larger project, the final products of which will be an article and electronic critical edition. The article will examine the manuscript tradition of Deus non habet and its relationship to the other major sentence collections attributed to the school of Laon, while the electronic critical edition will make the text of Deus non habet available for the first time to scholars interested in medieval intellectual and religious history.
