I am applying for a Summer Stipend to continue work on a book project tentatively entitled The Philosophy of William James. It is an examination of the thought of the great American philosopher/psychologist. I have been working on the preparation of my volume for about a decade. My draft is at present both overly long and disjointed, and in need of at least one major rewrite. My plan is to spend the grant period carrying out an intense review of the secondary literature. I have read about 600 relevant books and articles at least once over the past decade; but, now that the volume itself is drafted, I need to take another look at these materials. This re-surveying of the secondary literature is the last big job before I begin to work on the final shaping of the manuscript. I hope to accomplish that task during an anticipated sabbatical during the academic year 2010-11. The book which is under contract and should appear in less than two years after I submit the manuscript.
