This study sets out to answer the question: how did Mojaves, Quechans, Southern Paiutes, Utes, Yokuts, and other indigenous societies of the interior Far West maintain their autonomy amidst the unprecedented changes occurring throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries? I argue that these communities forged an "interior world" that solidified and even expanded amidst an ever-encroaching global market economy.
