The need for an international cultural perspective is crucial for responsible citizenship, and many students have little opportunity to consider such issues other than in a general education course. With that goal in mind, this project aims to refocus and expand the content of a general education Humanities course. Currently the course focuses on the intersections of politics and visual culture throughout the twentieth century. In an effort to strengthen the global perspective of the course, I would like to incorporate modern music and its relationship with the visual arts. My goal is to increase my personal knowledge in music history, and through an analysis of modernist visual and music history, to create an awareness and appreciation in my students for the international context of American cultural innovations.
