The State and Military Veterans Initiative is a new project
that teams Americans for the Arts and the National Lieutenant Governors
Association (NLGA). A first-of-its-kind multi-year collaboration, the Initiative
seeks to advance the policy, practice, and quality use of the humanities and
the creative arts in promoting health and well-being for persons across the
military continuum, including active duty and reserve service members,
state-level policy development; delivery where appropriate of customized
state-level technical assistance; and the creation of specialized training and
information resources.
NEH grant funds would be targeted to support the
presentation of three knowledge exchanges planned for 2019. Co-organized by
Americans for the Arts, NLGA, and the lieutenant governors of each state, these
exchanges will be designed to further the development of state-specific action
plans to address the needs of veterans and service members utilizing cultural
assets. Each forum will engage an audience and audience of up to 150
state-based practitioners from the showcase how the humanities can and are
being leveraged as tools to promote the healing, health, and well-being of
veterans and service members as well as their families and caregivers.
