Interpretive planning for a core exhibition in a new museum about the history of the Jewish community in the Washington, D.C., region.

The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington (JHSGW) requests a Planning Grant to support interpretive planning for a core exhibition about the history of the Jewish community in the Washington, D.C., region. As the core of JHSGW's new museum, the exhibition will focus on engagement with political, social, economic, and other issues to explore the history and character of the Jewish community in the nation's capital. Interpretive planning will identify local and national issues as well as historical episodes that will engage and challenge visitors, especially youth audiences, in a dialogue about the historical and ethical consequences of these episodes for individuals, the Jewish community, and the greater community. The resulting interpretive plan will invite audiences to critically consider the meaning of American identity as expressed through social and political engagement by exploring a distinctive American community from 1765 to the present.
