Hyunsoo Woo (Project Director: January 2012 to January 2014)

Planning for a traveling exhibition, a scholarly catalog, and public and educational programs on the art and culture of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) requests a $75,000 grant to support the work needed to plan "The Art of the Joseon Dynasty, 1392-1910" (working title), the first major exhibition of works of art from the Joseon dynasty that reigned in Korea for over 500 years. Organized in collaboration with the National Museum of Korea (NMK); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH); the exhibition will include some 120 objects in various media. As a major point of entry, and to better understand Korea's complex and rich history, the exhibition will explore the role and meaning of Confucian ideas as practiced and promulgated by the Joseon Dynasty. The exhibition will open at PMA in March 2014 and close May 2014; will then travel to LACMA, opening June 2014 and closing August 2014; and then travel to MFAH, opening September 2014 and closing December 2014.
