Implementation of a new permanent exhibition on Moravian colonial healthcare, beliefs, and practices.

Old Salem, Inc. (dba Old Salem Museums & Gardens, hereinafter OSMG) requests $400,000 for the final design, construction, and installation of a new permanent exhibition, The Moravian Way of Health and Healing. We are also requesting $60,000 for a two-year, full-time position in public humanities. Established in 1950, OSMG has become a premier living history museum that interprets all aspects of life in the Germanic theocratic town of Salem, from its founding by the Moravians in 1766 to the mid 1800s. This exhibition will be housed in the restored 1802 Doctor’s House, a key exhibition building at OSMG. It will be the only exhibition in the U.S. to present a thorough analysis of colonial German health and healing practices in the New World. This exhibition will examine the many ways that the humanities, medicine, and the natural sciences were inextricably interwoven in Moravian society and how the Moravians integrated care of body, mind, and soul from birth to death.
