Implementation of cross-media walking tours and related programming using television, a website, and mobile applications to explore the history of some of the city's New Deal-era murals as examples of public art within the social and political context of that period.

NCPB seeks a grant of $400,000 to support "New Deal Murals of San Francisco," an interactive, cross-media educational walking tour series that will leverage a range of media platforms, including public television, mobile applications, and web mapping and interactivity to help users interpret America’s historic places. The project will give audiences the background and national context to understand and appreciate the historical and cultural treasures of specific San Francisco locations via television, online or with the touch of a button. Using the latest locative media technology, we will create a mobile application to inspire people to actively explore and experience their community guided by in-depth, location-specific information on their cell phones and other handheld devices. Users will experience the murals with the guidance of prominent academics whose expertise will provide the context to fully understand these historical treasures, including their relevance today.
