Music Unwound

FAIN: GI-50596-13

Pacific Symphony (Santa Ana, CA 92704-8908)
Joseph I. Horowitz (Project Director: January 2013 to November 2017)

A series of multimedia performances and related symposia on the music of Anton Dvorak (1841-1904) and Charles Ives (1874-1954).

The present application requests $425,588 (a Chairman's Award) for Phase Two of an existing three-year $300,000 NEH project: "Music Unwound," a consortium of four orchestras each of which is engaged in re-thinking its core mission in order to incorporate thematic, contextualized, cross-disciplinary programming. The orchestras are the Pacific Symphony (Orange County, California -- the lead partner), the Louisville Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Buffalo Philharmonic. In Phase One each orchestra undertakes one or both of two festival topics: "Dvorak and America" (already presented in the 2011-12 season) and "Copland and Mexico" (to be presented in 2012-13 and 2013-14). For Phase Two (2014-15 and 2015-16), the consortium would add a new, third topic "Charles Ives's America" in addition to two new members: the South Dakota Symphony and the University of Texas.
